I could make some lame joke about Halloween bringing the Sabres tricks, but that would be, well, lame.

How ’bout I just repeat the post from yesterday’s game? Do y’all mind? No? Great!

Sigh. Here goes:

  • Nothing. Oh wait, Andrej Sekera came back from injury. That’s something.

Didn’t like: (Shall I alphabetize the list, or put it in order of importance?)

  • Effort was not good. We’ve all heard how several of them aren’t feeling well, so maybe the flu can be blamed for the effort over the past two games. However, I’m more inclined to say these games follow the Sabres’ formula – win against good teams, lose against bad teams. (See: seasons, past two)
  • The team let Ryan Miller down.
  • Sims is still alive, even after running over Miller. Do we have to go through the procedure for clearing the crease again? Fine. It involves these simple steps:
  1. Note presence of opposing player.
  2. See opposing player moseying/sneaking/driving into the area around your goaltender. This area is known as “the crease”.
  3. Pick up opposing player.
  4. Toss into 6th row.

See? It’s not hard!

  • Too many passes. Also too many inaccurate passes.
  • Horrible d-zone giveaways. Apparently some of the guys felt bad about missing Halloween and decided to give the Islanders some treats.

Could’ve used a little bit of this:

Yep, I took the easy way out.

And a little less of this:

Sadly, that's pretty accurate.

Rematch is Wednesday. Let’s hope Lindy does a bag skate or two before then.

Sabres vs. Leafs 10/30/09 Postmortem October 30, 2009

I love going to these games when the Sabres were owning the Leafs. I hate going to these games when the Sabres were struggling against the Leafs. One thing that’s indisputable – the atmosphere is always interesting. Well, two things are indisputable – the tickets are too rich for my blood, so I don’t go to these games anymore. Pity.

The Sabres did not play well, and still won the game. My guess is it’s not because the Sabres are soooo much better than the Leafs, but rather that the Leafs REALLY blow.

  • Making the Leafs take a whole bunch of penalties.
  • Defensemen clearing the crease. Miller is only ‘ittle. You need to protect him.
  • The Sabres blocked a lot of shots in the third. They still allowed a mess of shots to get through, though.
  • That Matt Stajan was dumb, dumb, dumb.

Didn’t like:

  • After making the Leafs take a bunch of penalties the Sabres failed to score on their power plays.
  • Too many shots allowed on the Leafs power plays.
  • Too many shots allowed in general.
  • Tyler Myers must’ve started feeling all cushy now that he’s staying and decided it was a good time to start taking dumb penalties.
  • No shots on goal for at least the first seven minutes of the third period.
  • Derek Roy gave away the puck an awful lot.

When a Myers falls in the forest but there’s no one around to hear him, did he still make a noise?

Next game: tomorrow night vs. the Islanders, who made Jose Theodore look like a bantam goalie tonight.

Well, blow me over with a feather… October 29, 2009

Tyler Myers is staying.

I saw some really nice townhouses with my mom this weekend. Might I suggest one of those, Tyler? You let me know if you need more information, k?

In the meantime, don’t start sucking just because you didn’t get sent back. You’ve captured the hearts of WNY, don’t let us down.

  • Quick start. Making Brodeur looking silly was just a bonus.
  • Jason Pominville. Dude needs a new stick manufacturer, but it was a heads-up play to get back and kick the puck on the power play. Nice goal, nice assist.
  • Tim Kennedy. Got the monkey off his back. I like his spunk.
  • New Jersey Devils D. How is it possible they weren’t reading the shots from the Sabres?

Didn’t like:

  • Derek Roy. He made some uncharacteristic mistakes.
  • Not much excitement in the game.
  • Too many Devils allowed to crash the Sabres’ net. If they do that they should pay for it.
  • Not letting Steve Montador get into a fight. He’s itching for one and you don’t want him to take a dumb penalty because of it.

Next up? The Leafs/Laffs/Loafs on Friday night.

Sabres 2009-2010 Strategy Session, Part 2 October 26, 2009

When we left our sage strategists (Darcy Regier, Lindy Ruff, Brian McKutcheon, James Patrick, and Jim Corsi), they were forming a plan to not suck. It appears so far their plan has worked, although we all know it’s a loooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg season.

Let’s revisit their plan: not sucking.

So how did they go about this whole “not sucking” strategy?

  • They sent guys to Portland who weren’t getting the job done. I lurve Nathan Gerbe, but he needs a little more seasoning in his stew before he’s ready for the NHL. Mike Weber seems to have regressed after battling a slew of injuries.
  • They kept the guys who played well, no matter what their age/status was. Tyler Myers is a big risk for the Sabres to take. It doesn’t look like it now, but it is. Matt Ellis is still here because he works his butt off every single shift.
  • They have Ryan Miller playing like the cocky, defiant, elite goaltender he can be.
  • They have a sexy defensive corp made up of a balanced mix of tough, grizzled veterans and young, enthusiastic newbies. And Hank Tallinder, who is a veteran but also seems to be a teddy bear. You’re a big guy, Hank.
  • That same defense is contributing on offense too.
  • The entire team is playing “the system” *cue scary music*.
  • The shot totals are downright gaudy, especially the shot differential.
  • There are secret weapons to pull out in a shootout. Helllloooooo, Tyler Myers.

For the next umpteenth weeks, the Sabres play Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Clear your weekend, kids – this could be an entertaining ride.
