Defense is sexy… October 5, 2009

I’ll admit this up front – I’m a defense girl. Sure, the goals are pretty and exciting, but give me a guy who’s killing himself to stop the other team from scoring and I’m happy. Huh – you’d think I’d like goaltenders better, but it’s the defensemen.

That’s one of the reasons I enjoy being a Sabres fan. They have a lot of defensemen, and I like most of them.

Let’s review the good:

  • Craig Rivet: skill, leadership, AND grit – heady combo
  • Chris Butler: young, but doesn’t play young; uses his size; is rounding into offensive form but still dependable on defense
  • Andrei Sekera: also young, but doesn’t play young; may be the Sabres’ replacement for Brian Campbell, but can actually play defense
  • Tyler Myers: dependable so far for a 19-year-old;  jury is still out
  • Toni Lydman: steady; does make mistakes, but oftentimes it’s because he’s covering for his defense partner
  • Steve Montador: won’t win any Norris trophies, but should provide steady defense

Which leads us to…the bad:

  • Henrik Tallinder: doesn’t use his size; injury problems; inconsistent
  • Nathan Paetsch: waive – that’s pretty much all I need or want to say

I’m willing to give Tallinder a pass for now, but I’m done with Paetsch.
