Is Pat Kaleta a dirty player? March 21, 2010

Let’s face it: the perception around the league seems to be that Pat Kaleta is a punk who won’t back up his hits with fighting. When he turtles like he did last night against Nathan Horton, it doesn’t help his reputation. However, Kaleta knows his role, and he plays it to perfection – he drew Horton, one of Florida’s best players, into taking a double minor for roughing. Getting his team a four-minute power play while simultaneously taking one of the opposition’s stars off the ice pretty much means Kaleta’s job is done.

He didn’t stop there, though – he scored a timely goal to put the Sabres up 2-0, and then performed his elaborate celebration while many of Florida’s players were probably screaming at him. It’s all in a day’s work for Kaleta – he seems to relish annoying opponents, and there’s no disputing he gets the other team off its game. But is Kaleta more than just an agitator? He is a dirty player? Let’s vote!

The game is at 5pm tonight. I’ll probably see some live and some on DVR. Sigh.

I think my only beef with Kaleta is how he sometimes turtles like he did last night. I know he does defend himself occasionally and he does draw penalties by not fighting, but I just wish he could defend himself more if he gave a big hit like he did against Horton. Other than that, I don’t find him to be a dirty player whatsoever.
