Best reasons why the Sabres won’t suck forever December 29, 2010

I know we’re all very down on the team right now, and with good reason. But I’d like to offer some hope to you, the downtrodden fans.

Hence, here are some reasons the Sabres won’t suck forever (in no particular order):

  • Tyler Ennis – even though I see shades of Maxim Afinogenov in him, at least his “give a damn” isn’t broken.
  • New owner Terry Pegula – not only does he have the money to field a competitive team, he understands hockey and appears to have a competitive spirit.
  • Tim Connolly/Jochen Hecht/Mike Grier/Craig Rivet/Rob Niedermayer/Patrick Lalime – all are set to become UFA’s at the end of the season.
  • The new kids on the block: Luke Adam, TJ Brennan, Marcus Foligno, Zack Kassian, Drew Schiestel – they’re looking good and getting more experience with every game.
  • Ryan Miller – is not an unrestricted free agent until after the 2013-2014 season.
  • Possibility of a new GM – Pegula hasn’t said whether or not he’ll keep the current management team around, but I have a feeling at least some of the front office will be cleaned out.
  • Draft placement – if the team continues to struggle they’ll get some good early draft picks.

Do we all feel better now?

I’m less enthused about Miller than most. I don’t think he’s playing up to his pay at the moment and wouldn’t mind seeing us bolster the rest of the team at his expense.

I think you’re one of the only fans who isn’t high on Miller. I think Miller is a very good goaltender. I’m not convinced he’s an elite goaltender along the lines of Roy/Brodeur, etc but I think he’s very good.

Just curious: if you traded Miller away, who would you try to replace him with?

No I don’t feel better yet. The way the game is called today. Big and fast is good. We for the most part are small. We don’t have any real goal scorers in the pipeline. We are not going to be good for a while. For a team that supposedly drafts so well. The leadership has all been traded for. Our veteran “D” has all been traded for. Most the young forwards are all small guys who are going to be hurt a lot. We spend a lot for Hecht and Pommer. Nope don’t feel better.

You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, Bob. If you read this blog, though, you’ll know that I tend to be pretty optimistic about the team, with occasional bouts of melancholy. I don’t agree with all of your points, but that’s what makes the world go ’round! Thanks for commenting!

I think the number one reason to be hopeful, related to the new ownership, is…. no more Larry Quinn!
I’ll admit i’m a Darcy fan and i may give him too much credit here but… i really wonder how much his hands are tied by Ownership(Tom) and if Larry Quinn interferes at all.

manda903 - December 30, 2010

I like Darcy too, but I think it might be time for fresh minds. I do think Larry Quinn is not staying around, and I definitely agree that Darcy’s hands have been tied by the owners throughout the years.

Jochen is signed for one more year at $3m after this one. He’s not going to be a UFA this summer.

manda903 - December 29, 2010

D’oh! You’ve ruined my whole day!

brian s. - December 30, 2010

It could be worse – he could have Pomminville’s contract and be around for at least 3 more years. And he will probably be a tradable asset next summer or during the season next year as he would be a help to a contender as a third line forward who is responsible defensively and can score the odd goal. Does that make you feel better?

5. Richard - December 29, 2010

Hopefully the new owner will appreciate that the Sabres have the goalie that he can build a team around and will do so. The defense is getting better (Mike Weber has been impressive lately for one). With any luck Tyler Ennis, unlike Max, is coachable, and will continue to improve. Probably he will put on some weight and be harder to push around. Bringing in a few forwards with heart will help.

6. Craig Kanalley - December 29, 2010

Yes, I feel better. Thank you. And nice meeting you finally tonight!

Nice meeting you too!
