I was happy to see yesterday that a team picked up Craig Rivet off waivers. It may be that the next few months will be his last-gasp chance to play in the NHL and I’m glad he’s with a team that will give him a change to actually help them out.

I’m sure Craig was right when he said he was sorry that he didn’t think the Buffalo fans saw what he was truly capable of. He’s not the player he was a few years ago, but I think he’s better than what we saw.

Plus, I have to give him major props for how he handled himself as a Sabre. Not many captains, or even veterans in general, would’ve taken the extended benching/healthy scratching that Rivet did with as much grace as he displayed.

So thank you, Craig Rivet, and farewell. I hope you fare well.

Since I spent a whole bunch of Mr. Pegula’s money yesterday I thought I would continue with my self-appointed GM job. Today I’m going to determine who, if anyone, is untouchable in terms of trades. Keep in mind that I’m saying these players are untouchable RIGHT NOW, not necessarily forever.

Here are my picks:

Tyler Ennis: I still want to give him some time to develop.

Jason Pominville: You all know Pominville is my favorite player. I think he’s a complete, consistent player and it would be nice to keep ONE of those around.

Thomas Vanek: I don’t think we can get a better player back, so I want to keep Vanek around.

Tyler Myers: Again, more time to develop.

That’s it. Everyone else, including Ryan Miller, is on the block if I’m the GM.

Let’s spend Mr. Pegula’s money! February 24, 2011

I’ve decided to go on a spending spree, people. What am I buying? PLAYERS. Glorious players! Mr. Pegula has said there are no financial constraints on the team, so I’m going to go shopping in the NHL Players Store and see if I can’t make the Sabres a better team.

Forwards:

BUY Zach Parise (+3,125,000)
SELL Mike Grier (-1,500,000)

BUY Brooks Laich (+2,066,667)
SELL Jochen Hecht (-3,525,000)

BUY Scott Hannan (+4,500,000)
SELL Craig Rivet (-3,500,000)

I won’t get greedy, so I’ll just make these moves now. What do you think? Feel free to tell me in the comments!

The pregame ceremony was pretty cool. Now let’s go get two points!

Liked:

  • Tyler Myers with a blast. Can we pain a circle right in that spot in the ice and name it “Myers’ Office”?
  • Pominville makes a great play on the wall and then follows through for his 15th.
  • Jochen Hecht doesn’t give up on the play and finally Tyler Ennis slams one in. I think I like the new lines so far.
  • Montador played another strong game. Sign him!

Didn’t like:

  • They look a little loosey-goosey. I’m guessing that’s the excitement of the past couple of days coming out.
  • The Sabres didn’t do real well in those fights, did they?

I know this blog was kind of lean, but honestly I didn’t see that much to comment on. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing! See you Friday: final score Sabres 4 Thrashers 1.
