I was at Pearl St Grill & Brewery for the game last night with some of my most favorite-ist Tweeps. We had an awesome time, and, as we all know by now, our beloved Sabres beat the sucky Flyers in overtime. That’s the jubilant part of me this morning.

Then there’s the sad part of me: my beloved Pommerdoodle, Jason Pominville, is likely done for the season after suffering a deep cut to his ankle. I am also sad that tomorrow’s game starts at three pm and I have to be go to dinner at five pm. There’s little chance of being able to see more than half of the game tomorrow.

So, let’s recap: Sabres won in overtime – Yay! Sabres lost Jason Pominville – Booooooo!

I’ve decided to go on a spending spree, people. What am I buying? PLAYERS. Glorious players! Mr. Pegula has said there are no financial constraints on the team, so I’m going to go shopping in the NHL Players Store and see if I can’t make the Sabres a better team.

Forwards:

BUY Zach Parise (+3,125,000)
SELL Mike Grier (-1,500,000)

BUY Brooks Laich (+2,066,667)
SELL Jochen Hecht (-3,525,000)

BUY Scott Hannan (+4,500,000)
SELL Craig Rivet (-3,500,000)

I won’t get greedy, so I’ll just make these moves now. What do you think? Feel free to tell me in the comments!

The pregame ceremony was pretty cool. Now let’s go get two points!

Liked:

  • Tyler Myers with a blast. Can we pain a circle right in that spot in the ice and name it “Myers’ Office”?
  • Pominville makes a great play on the wall and then follows through for his 15th.
  • Jochen Hecht doesn’t give up on the play and finally Tyler Ennis slams one in. I think I like the new lines so far.
  • Montador played another strong game. Sign him!

Didn’t like:

  • They look a little loosey-goosey. I’m guessing that’s the excitement of the past couple of days coming out.
  • The Sabres didn’t do real well in those fights, did they?

I know this blog was kind of lean, but honestly I didn’t see that much to comment on. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing! See you Friday: final score Sabres 4 Thrashers 1.

Enroth is in goal. Ryan Miller is taking a nap. Patrick Lalime is, well, apparently completely superfluous.

Liked:

  • A hit happened along the wall and hubs and I both said, “Who was THAT?” Turns out it was Nathan Gerbe. Alrighty then!
  • I have to give Connolly credit for hangin’ out behind the Sabres’ net trying to let time run out in the first period before the whistle was blown to start the PP.
  • Heh. And guess who scores? Staffy! By the way, when I saw that through-the-legs maneuver by Vanek I rolled my eyes. I’m not too proud to admit it. Nice job, Vanek!
  • Somebody needs to buy Jhonas Enroth a steak dinner after this…
  • Nice feed by Hecht to Pominville and he bangs one home.
  • Good try on a give n go by Paul Byron. It didn’t work, ultimately, but it was a quality play.
  • Wow. Smart play by Mike Grier to chip the puck out of the d-zone in the waning seconds of regulation.
  • And JOCHEN is SMOKIN!

Didn’t like:

  • Bad Tyler Myers! Bad!
  • Memo to the Sabres: having a shooting gallery in front of your AHL goaltender is a bad idea.
  • Pominville takes a penalty. Wow.
  • Shots are 154 Montreal with seven minutes left in the first period. This is… poor, fellas.
  • Cripey. The Sabres just can’t sustain any pressure at ALL.
  • How ’bout some defense, guys?
  • Sabres cannot buy a goal. Eesh.
  • Weber gets a penalty with about a minute and a half left and Lindy Ruff has kittens.

Full disclosure: I’m watching this game starting at almost midnight. I know the final score, but that’s how dedicated I am to you, my readers…

Liked:

  • Nice save by Miller on Stamkos. The Sabres need to stop letting the Lightning march into their zone, though.
  • Wait, wait, wait. It looks like Tim Connolly cares tonight!
  • Hel-looo Steve Yzerman…
  • Oh, Jordan Leopold. How I love you… goes into that offensive zone with authority!
  • Yep, Leopold is having a very good game so far…
  • Wow, Myers just made Lecavalier look small.
  • Great play by Weber! He finds Vanek, and Vanek, as usual, puts it home.
  • Huh. I think Morrisonn just told Weber not to fight. And Weber listened.
  • And the bodies are flying!
  • Jordan Leopold continues his great play. What a tying goal!
  • I love it when the Sabres are full of piss n’ vinegar!
  • Uh-oh, they’ve angered the German!
  • I have a feeling Tyler Myers would win a footrace with Martin St. Louis.
  • WHAT A PASS, Tyler Ennis. Tim Connolly owes you a steak dinner.
  • Um, are the Lightning unfamiliar with Vanek? After all the goals he’s scored against them?
  • Oh, now this is just getting silly. Staffy scores another one…
  • Aaaannndddd yet another one. Go Staffy!

Didn’t like:

  • I like Chris Butler, but get well soon, Steve Montador!
  • Note to opponents: how many times do I have to tell you not to hit Tyler Ennis? It will end badly for you!
  • Well, Stafford gives away the puck and Miller lets in one he probably should’ve had. Alrighty then.
  • Oh, Tyler Myers. You bad boy! Sit in box and feel shame!
  • Heh. Smaby took one in the cup.
  • Whoa, Sekera was beaten badly on that play…
  • Memo to Nathan Gerbe: punching to the head is a penalty. Tonight, at least.
  • Memo to other Sabres players: Nathan Gerbe is only ‘ittle. Don’t hurt him.
  • I hope you’re all right, Ryan Malone. In other news, ice is slippery.
  • This was not Sekera’s finest game. And that’s okay.
  • Stafford was pushed into Roloson.
  • Man, that’s a full penalty box, boys… good thing it didn’t come back to bite you.

Sabres are off to Miami. Maybe they’ll see Michael Westen there. If they do, and they could throw him into a duffel bag for me that would be great! See you Thursday! Final score: 7-4 Sabres! Woo!
