It’s just wrong to have RJ back and yet have the game televised on Versus.

  • I was happy to hear Roy showed up at the arena yesterday, but walking with a cane? Oy. I know why – that was some pretty serious surgery that he had, but still… to see a hockey player using a cane…
  • Woo! Paul Gaustad actually earned his keep!
  • Shots are 11-3 Buffalo eights minutes in. Amanda approves.
  • And whodathunkit that the Gaustad line would be the one leading the offensive charge? Yay Cody McCormick!
  • That’s a brave woman, going into the bench for an interview during play.
  • Dude – what a play by Sekera. Coast-to-coast, but the Sabres couldn’t capitalize. Too bad.
  • I think this is Gaustad’s best game so far this year.
  • According to Sabres PR, Cody McCormick has eight shots so far in this game. The Sabres franchise record for shots by one player? Twelve.

Didn’t like:

  • As per the illustrious Mike Harrington, I know that Luke Adam is scratched in favor of Nathan Gerbe. A curious choice, but I wonder if Gerbe’s been told to fish or cut bait…
  • Ok, if they’re calling a penalty on Mike Weber I totally didn’t see it. Looked like a good hip check to me.
  • Booooo. And the Flyers score on the power play. Amanda does not approve.
  • Is Ennis afraid of the interviewer? He won’t look her in the eye.
  • Ah, the mystery behind Adam being scratched has been solved. He has the flu.
  • Halfway through the game and Jochen Hecht is at a 20% win rate for faceoffs.
  • Good traffic and movement on the power play but no results.
  • Oh, Ennis, you silly boy. Gotta watch those diving penalties.
  • That was not a good goal.
  • Apparently it’s okay to maul the opposition, guys. Just so you know.
  • Wha? Where was Ryan Miller on that goal? He looked like a deer caught in headlights.

Final score 5-2. Five unanswered goals. Way to not win three in a row, boys!

I’m doing a million other things while I watch this game, so I can’t guarantee I’ll be able to make too many great observations, but I’ll do what I can. 😉

  • The guys came out with some jump. Maybe losing that Colorado game pissed them off. That would be nice…
  • The play from Niedermayer to McCormick was a nice one and McCormick made a good decision shooting. Luke Adam kept going to the net and cashed in on the rebound. Kids: this is why you keep going to the net.
  • Jochen Hecht makes a nice play and SCORES A GOAL! Yes, you read that right.
  • They’re crashing the net. Yay!
  • Pominville makes a nice play to get the puck out of the zone. Kudos to the guy he passed it to (I missed who it was) for being in a position to accept the pass.
  • The Sharks are getting smothered at every turn. Hopefully that will increase their frustration level and thus their penalty-taking. I approve of this.
  • I’ll give Ryan Miller credit. So far he’s made the saves when the Sabres needed him to.
  • I like Vanek and Pominville playing together. I never understood why they didn’t play together more.
  • Did they offer a bonus for hitting tonight?

Didn’t like:

  • Mike Weber needs to see Rob Ray for some boxing lessons. Kudos for not backing down, but he didn’t win that fight.
  • Tim Connolly has been pretty weak on faceoffs for the past couple of weeks. He’s at 29% after one period, 33% after two. Jochen Hecht joins him in Suck-land with a 29% win rate after two periods.
  • I don’t like Dany Heatley. That is all.

Now THAT was the kind of road game the team should be playing more often. Well done! On to Phoenix on Saturday! Say Hello to BizNasty for us!

The Sabres are on another Western road trip. Now, before you go committing hari-kari, let me say this: use a sharp sword.

  • The Sabres come out with some pep and pressure yet another back-up.
  • Wow – the power play actually scores quick! Woo-hoo!
  • Vanek seems to like playing in the high altitude. He’s got some jump in his step.
  • WHAT a shot by Pominville. I think the population is steadily climbing now…
  • Whoa – I like that Montador isn’t shy about shooting the puck…
  • Question to ponder: How many cross-checking penalties does Thomas Vanek draw each year?

Didn’t like:

  • Sekera had a tough first period. I think he’ll recover though.
  • Sabres in penalty trouble=bad.
  • Why is Ryan Miller flopping around like a catfish in heat? (NO idea if a catfish goes into heat, BTW)
  • Isn’t Grier/Gaustad/Niedermayer supposed to be our top checking line? They’re trapped in the Sabres end.
  • Gotta love phantom penalty calls… “Drew Stafford, two minutes for being on the ice!”
  • I’m not sure I’m a fan of playing seven D consistently, but I suppose it can’t be too much worse than playing Nathan Gerbe…
  • Tyler Ennis owes Luke Adam a BIG steak.
  • UGH. Just UGH.

The Sabres are off to San Jose. If I remember correctly they like playing there. One point’s better than no points, but it’s only a small consolation.

Apparently the Sharks don’t win when they come to Buffalo. Most excellent. Let’s keep that streak alive!

  • Both teams seem to have a decent level of energy in this game. Maybe it won’t be a snoozer!
  • The Hecht-Pominville-Adam line has been playing well for a couple of games now. Let’s pot some more shots, guys!
  • The pace so far is favoring the Sabres. Hopefully they’ll keep skating and the Sharks will fade.
  • Very good power play for the Sabres after Thornton, for some inexplicable reason, decides to mug Nathan Gerbe.  Unfortunately, no dice.
  • And THAT’S why we didn’t want Pominville in the box! He scores a shortie and looks majorly relieved. We just taught DD to say “Go Pommer!”
  • The Sabres are outshooting the Sharks by a lot this period, I think. And that’s fine with me.
  • Gaustad scores TWO GOALS. I repeat, TWO GOALS, in this game.
  • Vanek also scores two goals, but we’re not as surprised. 😉

Didn’t like:

  • And in a surprise to no one, Grier misses the net on a 2-on-1.
  • Poor Pommer looked so confused when they put him in the penalty box. “What did I do? I’m so sadddddd!”
  • Harry Neale is wasted.
  • I know none of us expected the Sabres to run over the Sharks, but if they blow this lead…

It’s being billed as a battle between the two goaltenders. I’m guessing it will be, since the Sabres can’t score and the Bruins aren’t exactly burning up the ice either.

  • Ennis sometimes reminds me of a gnat. He buzzes around and he’s annoying and you can’t figure out where he is or where he’s going. And since he plays for the Sabres, I’m ok with that.
  • I’ve been waiting for Luke Adam to start scoring goals. He’s deserved a better fate than he’s been getting lately.
  • And just when we aren’t sure Vanek is a star any more he goes and scores a goal by banking it in off of Thomas’ back. Hee. It wasn’t a great one for Tim Thomas to give up, but it WAS a great one for Thomas Vanek to put in.
  • Knocking Bruins out of the game pleases me.

Didn’t like:

  • Oh, Miller. Why? Oh… why? Why? And Miller’s personal record for shutout minutes comes to a stupid, awful end.
  • Gaustad is playing in this game. Huh. Totally invisible.
  • What the h-e-double hockey sticks is Miller doing tonight? He’s going for far too many strolls.
  • The Sabres are on a power play? Who knew?
  • Did Derek Roy just bitch about that call?
  • The only funny part about the commercial w/the kid going nuts after getting the Ovie jersey is the Santa Claus w/the Rock Band guitar around his neck.
  • Oh, poor Pominville. Poor, poor Pominville. You’re about as lucky as a million-to-one Kentucky Derby horse.
  • Is Tim Thomas losing it? He’s lookin’ a little twitchy out there.
  • If McCormick had hands the Sabres might’ve scored a goal right there at the end of regulation. Poo.
  • Oh, Luke Adam. I do feel bad for you, but that was a BAD penalty to take, kid. NOTE: Apparently you don’t have to actually bleed to get a four-minute penalty.

What a way to lose a game. Weird.
